VELVET CHAIN
By: Joyce Sutedja

Nonconformity, independence, intelligence. Velvet Chain is brimming with all of these, and much more, with its trip-hop style mixed with just the right amount of rock, pop, and funk. The music feels like a cross between two contradictions: the driving, technical grooves of modern music versus the old-school, rock and roll guitars. The unique flavor of the group seems to radiate from sheer, relentless energy, mixed influences, and intelligent lyrics, making it an extraordinary one.

The Los Angeles-based band's "big break" was a 45-second stint on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but despite its short playing time, Velvet Chain drew in more fans there with its magnetic music than they had playing hundreds of shows. The success of national exposure didn't faze the band, however. The members stayed true to their music, putting out as much as they could. Even in releasing their four albums, with a fifth in the works, Velvet Chain exudes uniqueness. The band even sells Custom Velvet Chain Albums, letting the fans choose the songs and the cover they want. Not to mention, the band is an independent one-profiting very little and putting out maximum work. Lead singer Erika Amato handles all orders herself, while Jeff Stacy, guitarist and songwriter, does all producing. Hard work and dedication prove to be the band's forte.

Erika Amato's sultry, chameleon-like voice is not one to be categorized. Come to think of it, neither is she. With an outrageous energy that caused her much trouble in school when she would randomly break into song or dance mid-class, she draws the attention of the audience while onstage and refuses to give it back. Jeff Stacy, while being producer and remix artist of Velvet Chain, also takes the jobs of musician, songwriter, lyricist, and general leader of the band. He and Amato formed the band together, and worked the music around Amato's voice, drawing out dark, intense sounds supported by an irresistible beat.

The eight members of the band all contribute to the incredible music, each doing his part to add the different layers that produce the final, bursting effect. Talent at a young age reigns supreme with these guys. Session drummer Brett Chassen has played with such stars as Buddy Rich (from ages 2 to 7) and Carlos Santana (when he was 12). Erika Amato landed her first real acting gig at age eleven. Arif, being the band's extremely adept and agile guitarist, quick at learning and with insane amounts of style, once conducted Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture in his dining room at the age of five. And that's just three of them…

Velvet Chain is now working on its fifth album, "Asteroid Belt," which will come out in spring of 2003. With a constantly metamorphosing sound and a strong, growing fan base, this band is one that refuses to disappoint. For more information check out their official website.
