SIEDAH GARRETT
By: Joyce Sutedja

Reinvention-a second chance, the ability to constantly change, the quality that makes us realize when something is truly different. Versatility-multi-talented, structured, the ability to be a singer, songwriter, producer, chameleon. Slap these two together, and you have Siedah Garett, well-versed veteran of the music biz in her new, self-titled album.

Garrett's ability to bridge the gap between "danceable rock 'n' roll, intelligent pop and pumped-up R&B," as her official biography so eloquently puts it, has become her trademark-from working with such greats as Michael Jackson, Vanessa Williams, and Aretha Franklin, she's developed an extensive stylistic range. Not only that, but, as her revival into the world of music performance, she's decided to take it in her own direction this time. The record, "Siedah," is the culmination of Garrett's determination to make the music her own.

Her pop-influenced, R&B tinged music, paired with a rock band as her support, combines to create a style that is undoubtedly unique. Garrett's voice and manner, which are that of no other artist, is decidedly rock and roll. She chose her band wisely, making sure of their ability to perform well live as well as in the studio. With this in mind, the record clearly shows a more intense feel, filled with more energy and sound than normal recordings. Garrett's focus was to be able to create the same sound in the studio as she does on-stage, and the goal was definitely attained-a different, unique, almost excited feeling leaks through even the recorded tracks, a hint at what's to come in the live show.

Garrett's reintroduction to the recording studio produced an incredible amount of support from her highly respected friends and colleagues. Being among such prestigious circles, the difficulty was in breaking away from preconceived notions and creating a style that belonged only to her, and expressed her true emotions. Always under the shadow of co-writing "Man in the Mirror" with Michael Jackson, Garrett has since proved her ability to break out of that mold and create her own. Her strength and determination have been integral in reinventing herself, more real than ever before.

Siedah Garrett's uncommon rock-pop music puts a twist on the ideas already developed about her style. Her determination to make this return to the recording studio an expression of her own style and her own feeling have created an act that does not disappoint-the intensity of her music shows true emotion, and an open and willing revelation of herself.
