JOSH KELLEY
By: Joyce Sutedja

How often would you stumble onto an artist so determined to stay grounded that he recorded a song to remember where he came from to serve as a reminder? Josh Kelley, the singer-songwriter from Augusta, Georgia, not only appeals because of this honest, glowing personality, but because of his upbeat, deep pop rock. In the vein of John Mayer, Kelley's music creates a similar reaction of, "Hey, wait…it's poppy, and I like it?"

This twenty-two year old sensation has an effervescent life that leaks into his songs, and his personality shows in his official site biography when he says, "In…tough situations, I always slip into my acoustic rap medley. Sometimes people need a little acoustic Snoop, before they're ready to hear my stuff." The soul in his music comes from a refusal to create music that is superficial and shallow, that is created for mainstream. Instead, it speaks of reality, deep and inspiring. Kelley's voice overflows with emotion, passion, and sensitivity. It is a voice that seems to lead the listener through the world of Josh Kelley. When listening, it seems as if the music and the lyrics almost force one to understand and to see things the way Kelley sees them.

Kelley's multi-talented musical abilities are demonstrated his debut album, "For the Ride Home," off label Hollywood Records. His talents aren't the only things that got him where he is now, though. Kelley's persistence played a major role in his success. Unlike most acts out there today, he took his future in his own hands through-and what other medium could it be?-the Internet. He made his songs into mp3's, used Napster to his advantage, and SPAM-mailed people who liked music that sounded like his: "I'd type in like Dave Matthews and get a list of people who have Dave Matthews. Then I'd type in, 'If you like Dave Matthews, try Josh Kelley.'" Doing this, he eventually got the attention of Eric Clinger, A&R representative for Hollywood Records. That's a modern twist on the old rock fairy tale.

Josh Kelley's soulful pop rock has captured the attention of many. His magnetic personality seeps into his music and his voice, and Kelley is an act sure to have great success. The combination of talent and life that is so obviously shown in him makes him a sure bet. He knows his roots, and won't easily forget them. His unique abilities create a beautiful debut album, and Josh Kelley is sure to be down-to-earth and openhearted "For the Ride Home." Check him out at his official website.
